Second take on the establishing shot for Diomira, this time backlit. I find this kind of lighting more satisfying as it makes the city look like it's emerging from the clouds like a distant memory. I decided to add a tramway into the composition because this mean of transport has been around for a longtime and, in my opinion, it never fails to give an old-fashioned charm to a city (I'm thinking of Lisboa and San Fransisco). A tram travelling above a sea a fog also seemed like a poetic idea, much like the train in
Spirited Away. The model is directly inspired by the trams in my hometown simply because their sight personally bring me back to another time. On a side note, being too focused on the original design, I've only just realised its connection to the strings needs the reworked in this new situation. The way it is now, it would probably not be able to stay horizontal and just hang in a very unsafe angle...
One-point perspective was used
Hey Julien - very striking composition - my eye was drawn to it like a magnet! The only thing I'd pick up on is the disparity between the city and the cable-car - they feel like they're from different worlds to me in design terms, and that maybe the cable-car needs greater charm/antiquity in line with all those domes and turrets. You've obviously spent a long time making this image very complete, but I would just say that a quicker drawing, made available via thumbnails etc. might have been more useful in terms of soliciting just this kind of feedback. Don't misunderstand me - loving your commitment to making high-quality work, but the issue here is about design logic/continuity etc.
ReplyDeleteHi Phil! Ah yes, I see where you're coming from. Something older and more ornamental will indeed suits this universe better. I'm happy to hear it looks engaging by the way, because I feared the whole sunset-mountain-like-city-thing would just bore the viewer's eye.
DeleteThanks for advice! - In this case however, I doubt the thumbnail would have been detailed enough for you to see what kind of look I was going for and we'd have ended up having the same conversation anyway. But I'll make sure to use thumbnails in the future. Anyhow, nothing that can't be undone. :)
Jeeeez the atmosphere dude!! Really impressive, I'm jealous!
