Invisible Cities: Diomira Exploration

This is one of the ideas I had for the establishing shot (although I'm not sure it could be classified as such because of the foreground). Even though it would still need a lot of tweaking in term of lighting, I feel like something has been lost in translation between the thumbnail and the bigger painting. Scaling the latter down has made some flaws more visible to me as well: the lamps look distracting, the tree doesn't really pop up, the rock/canyon doesn't look very smartly placed and is too bright. Because many things don't feel right, I think I should move onto a new composition. Maybe having the sun setting down behind the city would create a more interesting mood? I'm all about developping new possibilities. In the meantime, I'm still trying to catch the feeling of nostalgia Calvino talked about in the extract, but its personal nature makes it a real challenge. Hope I'll get closer to it with every new concept sketch!

  1. Hi Julien,

    that's a really good looking painting you've got here : )
However I do agree with you, the thumbnail seems more ..hmmm...magical? Nostalgic? There's something about the simplicity of the thumbnail that gives all the necessary emotions, whereas the bigger painting seems more like a study of a city visited over summer...
I really like the purple and yellow colours of the thumbnail. Are you going to fully abandon that palette? Maybe try experimenting with it in a final composition?

You final crit is next Friday, isn't it? So that means you still have some time to experiment and try different things : )

Good luck and keep the blog updated! It's always good to see drawings and paintings popping up on blogger : D

    1. Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad we agree on that. Oh no, don't worry, it's not my intention. I actually think this palette has a lot of potential too.

It is indeed. :) Yes hopefully — I'm not very fast so it's going to be a real challenge haha. :P

      Thanks again! Will do!
